The Graypants design studio was founded in 2008 by two former architecture students, Seth and John. They believe that beauty can come from anywhere, even from the container park. The lights designed by Graypants are definitely scrap lights – made out of 100% recycled cardboard. The Seattle-based office Graypants designed a series of pendants, the now famous Scrap Lights, created out of recycled and sliced cardboard sheets that are formed to make the lights. To form the Scrap lights, rings are cut by laser out of the recycled cardboard boxes, layered and then glued together to the shapes of the pendants in a way that light can fall through to cast shadows on the wall. The pendants are then coated to be fire-resistant before they are hung from the ceiling as semi transparent pendant lamps. In 2012 Graypants open a production facility in Holland to cover the European distribution. Graypants works with social works programs in Holland to employ workers in their facilities.
